For example, when I was going through the SFQC (Special Forces Qualification Course) I wore a white candy stripe designating me as an unassigned Special Forces trainee. Those not qualified wore a “Candy Stripe” which was just a bar of the appropriate color for the unit they were assigned to worn under the crest. Originally the Flash was what signified that an SF soldier was fully qualified. Officers wear their rank centered on the Flash. Enlisted me wear the Special Forces Crest centered on the Flash. That red flash in the picture is for the 7th Special Forces Group. The color of that Flash indicates the Special Forces unit the soldier is serving in. The background behind the Crest is called a “flash”. Generally qualifying and serving as an SF soldier is a defining achievement in a person’s life.
